History of the campsite
From agriculture to a renowned campsite
The Berghof has a long and exciting history dating back to imperial times. Originally, the Berghof was a farm and once even belonged to the mother of the famous composer Alban Berg. Over the years, however, not only the times have changed, but also the farm itself - into a place that now welcomes holidaymakers from all over the world.
The foundation stone for this change was laid in 1955, when Helmut Ertl decided to turn the traditional farm into something new: a campsite. With a lot of pioneering spirit, hard work and a feel for the needs of travellers, he created the first infrastructure for guests who wanted to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of Lake Ossiach.
His son Gerhard later took over the family business together with his wife and continued to develop it. During this time, the campsite grew steadily, new pitches, modern sanitary facilities and additional services were added. The once small site became a popular holiday destination for campers from all over Europe.
Today, the campsite is run by the third generation: Barbara, Gerhard's daughter, runs the business together with her husband Marcus with just as much passion and innovative spirit. Tradition is important to us - but it is just as important to move with the times. Modernisation, new offers and sustainable concepts ensure that our campsite remains a special place for relaxing holidays in the future.
What has never changed, however, is our family centrepiece. For 70 years, hospitality, quality and closeness to nature have been at the centre of everything we do. Our aim is to offer our guests not just a pitch, but a real holiday home.
Alban Berg - the namesake
No, the Berghof is not called Berghof because it is situated on a mountain. After all, we are located in the valley, right next to one of the warmest bathing lakes in Carinthia. But our lakeside campsite Berghof takes its name from the Austrian composer Alban Berg (1885-1935), who lived here at the turn of the century and also wrote part of his famous opera Wozzeck.
